Until now, App World support has been silent on the issue, referring customers back to us for a problem we can’t resolve… we don’t have access to App World’s back-end!

But we recently got a response from App World support that we’d like to share here. We’ll continue to try to work with RIM to get a resolution to this.

At this time the only workaround is to have users try to re-log into My World.  This will not resolve the problem in all cases but it may provide some assistance to some users:
-open App World and navigate to My World
-click on the menu key and select “Log In”
-enter PayPal credentials used to purchase the application

We worked very hard to sort out all the nuances of the new OS, but one issue remained for people who use Copy2Contact to capture data from a web page viewed inside Internet Explorer. Inexplicably, the shortcut key configured to activate Copy2Contact simply didn’t work from within IE, though it works everywhere else. A real nuisance.

The problem was traced to a new “Protected Mode” in Internet Explorer 7 and later that, in simple terms, prevents IE from communicating with other applications. The shortcut key, when pressed inside IE, falls into the protected category and is blocked without any notification. Since this mode is on by default, most users are subject to it.

For a while now we’ve been advising people to simply turn off protected mode, but we recently found a work-around for the issue and built it into version 2.11.3 of Copy2Contact, which you can download here.

The work-around is seamless and IE users will have no further trouble when capturing data in Protected Mode.

One feature is that the Copy2Contact Add-in allows Copy2Contact to “guess” the email address of a contact if you’ve captured text from an incoming email inside Outlook. If the text you highlighted does not include an email address, Copy2Contact can get the sender of the email message from Outlook via the Add-in and offer it to you as an option.

Another feature provided by the Add-in is a special menu on each Outlook item window with some extra options, such as “Copy As Text”. See Reverse Copy2Contact for more info.

Outlook, however, is notoriously idiosyncratic when it comes to Add-ins, and it can seemingly randomly decide to disable an add-in and even report that the add-in has caused Outlook to crash. If the add-in is disabled by Outlook, the features it provides will all of a sudden not be available.

If you find that features provided by the Copy2Contact Add-in have stopped working, you can re-enable the add-in inside Outlook. You can also disable the add-in if Outlook insists that it is causing a problem.

Outlook 2000-2003: Open Outlook and go to “Tools”, then “Options”, then the “Other” tab, then “Advanced Options”, then “COM Addins”. Check (or uncheck) the “Copy2Contact add-in” option and then click OK. Close Outlook, close and re-open Copy2Contact.

Outlook 2007: Go to “Tools”, then “Trust Center” and click on the “Add-ins” section. Click on the “Copy2Contact add-in” and then click on the Go button towards the bottom. The “COM Add-ins” page will open and you can check (or uncheck) the “Copy2Contact add-in” there.

If Outlook keeps disabling the add-in, another option is to download and re-install Copy2Contact, which should restore the add-in as well. Download here.

One of the coolest ways people are using Copy2Contact is by sending themselves the results of a 411 lookup via text message, and then grabbing it with Copy2Contact right into their address book.
